Understanding how teeth whitening works will help you choose a treatment that’s right for you. With non-bleach, take-home, and even laser options to choose from, it can be a difficult decision to make.

At AA Family Dental Group, we want our patients to be informed consumers. Below we’ve compiled information to help you choose the best way to whiten your smile.

To Bleach or Not to Bleach

Essentially, teeth whitening works in one of two ways: with or without bleach.

Without using bleach, only surface stains can be removed, which can be done at home or in the dentist’s office. Toothpastes, for example, have a grainy texture that gently scrubs the enamel. A professional cleaning will remove stains and tartar too.

This gentler method can’t remove deep-set, long-term stains. If you seek dramatic results, bleach is the preferable option.

“Bleach” is actually referring to hydrogen or carbamide peroxide. The molecular compound of peroxide is very conducive to tooth whitening. It passes easily into the tooth on a molecular level. Its oxygen ions push out the darker, less complex molecules responsible for stains.

Professional strength whitening is effective and safe; however, strong concentrations of peroxide can irritate the gums. It’s best to let a professional administer powerful teeth whitening treatments. Most in-office treatments utilize a peroxide solution between 20 and 35 percent.

Do Teeth Whitening Lasers Actually Work?

Teeth whitening lasers are a divisive issue among consumers. Some claim they’ve experienced more powerful results when using a laser, while others report there’s no difference.

Proponents argue that the light speeds up the whitening reaction. The UV light is thought to hasten the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide.

Consider if this experimental addition is worth it when choosing a whitening system.
